FLATS board members Debi Boughton, Randy Smith, and Dan Martin were honored to accept a generous $30,000 donation from the Adair County SB40 Developmental Disability Board.
These funds made it possible to begin construction of Phase 3.1 of the Forest Lake Trail System and develop a range of inclusive features at the FLATS-Theta Psi Trailhead at the corner of Missouri and Osteopathy.
These features include an .7 mile paved ADA-accessible trail and an innovative nature playscape that Alta Planning and Design, LLC, developed to provide a comparable outdoor play opportunity for people of all ages and abilities.
The Mission of the Adair County SB40 is to engage in advocacy, promote inclusion, and provide essential resources to assist people with developmental disabilities to live self-determined lives.

Now in its 8th year, the FLATS Trail Half Marathon is quickly making Kirksville and Thousand Hills State Park a destination for adventurous runners from across the midwest. In 2017 we had our first sellout, raised over $6,000 for the Forest Lake Area Trail System, and had a blast.
This year features a $500 prize for a new male or female course record, live music, soft-tissue massage, FLATS Trail Pale Ale (courtesy of the Kirksville Guild of Brewers), and most of all the chance to enjoy the beautiful Thousand Hills Trail and then, after the race, the chance to kick back and celebrate your run at Jackson Stables.
Register now (and learn more about the race) at UltraSignup.com or contact us if you’d like to volunteer!
On Wednesday, April 25th members of the Forest Lake Area Trail System (FLATS) will host an Open House between 5:00 and 7:00 pm at the Adair County Annex Building located at 300 N. Franklin.
FLATS organized this Open House, with guidance from the U.S. National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, to begin planning for the full four-plus mile paved trail that will connect Kirksville’s historic downtown directly to Thousand Hills State Park. A .6 mile section of this trail within Thousand Hills State Park was completed in 2015 and FLATS will soon begin construction of a .7 mile section of trail on the south side of Missouri Street heading west from Osteopathy.
At the Open House representatives of FLATS will share information about the project, answer any questions, and collect feedback and recommendations from residents and stakeholders on several possible connections to the park. Our goal is a route that will meet the needs of all residents, particularly those who live on or near a potential route. This is a public meeting and all are welcome to attend.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve installed the sign thanking the Founding Donors of the Forest Lake Area Trail System at the FLATS Phase 1 Trail Head by the Thousand Hills Dining Lodge and it’s beautiful!
Thanks to the incredible craftsmanship and generosity of Mike Schmitter at Jamco Awards (who made the name plates) and Joe Story (who crafted the sign) we were able to put up a sign that truly reflects the amazing contributions of our founding donors.
Head out to the trail today to see it yourself!
FLATS will launch our Phase 3.1 Capital Campaign Friday, April 21 at Maxwell’s Restaurant in Kirksville, Missouri. Our goal is to raise $75,000 as matching funds for the $147,000 Recreational Trails Program Grant we were awarded in Fall 2016 by July 4.
